The River Road Scenic Byway follows the Au Sable River through the Huron National Forest. Join other birders and keep your eyes peeled to see the American Bald Eagle in flight over the woodlands. The area along the river has been set-aside as a recovery site for our national bird, so you're likely to see the eagles at any time of year.

The area around the Au Sable River is perfect for the eagles' hunting grounds. Watch as the majestic birds swoop from the sky to snatch fish and local waterfowl straight from the water. The shallow areas created by the six hydro dams aid the eagles in their hunting. Stake out one of these areas for a great view of the hunter in action.

Take a canoeing trip down the river while you are in the area. Keep your eye out for the native Trumpeter Swans, Mallards, Mergansers, and Wood Ducks. Remember to scan the banks for a variety of songbirds like the secretive Winter Wren, the Northern Water Thrush and the Black-and-white Warbler.

All along the byway, enjoy the sight of Purple Martin colonies, bluebirds, and the occasional osprey. At dawn or dusk watch for wild turkeys along the roadside.

See soaring eagles dive for their food, gaze at the elegant swans gliding across the water, and listen to the songbirds of all seasons. The River Road Scenic Byway is a birder's paradise with majestic hunters, graceful swimmers, and tuneful songsters.
