The Illinois, Missouri, and Mississippi Rivers come together to create unique wildlife viewing opportunities, and the Meeting of the Great Rivers Scenic Route presents an opportunity to get an up-close view of an impressive array of animals and birds. Although numerous varieties of animals make their homes here, the area is particularly famous for bird watching.,
At any time of year, go bird watching at Pere Marquette State Park, located on the byway in Grafton, Illinois. Depending on the season, you can experience a large selection of North American birds while they are in their migratory patterns.
During spring, carefully spot the Horned Lock and the Northern Oriole. Listen for the Pileated Woodpecker and the Tennessee Warbler. Count the Ruby-throated Hummingbirds and the Great Blue Heron. In the warm summer, try and locate a Blue Jay or a Belted Kingfisher. Hear to the distinctive call of the Chipping Sparrow or the “hoot” of the Barred Owl. Explore the park’s forests while looking for the Whip-poor-will and the Great Crested Flycatcher.
The fall provides new bird-watching opportunities. While surveying the forested area of Pere Marquette State Park, look closely for the Northern Bobwhite and the Eastern Kingbird, and the park’s streams and lakes present an excellent chance to witness the Great Heron and the Little Blue Heron. Winter is an excellent season for bird watching in the park. You’re likely to see Bald Eagles and Canadian Geese. Get an up-close view of the Red-tailed Hawk, Hairy Woodpecker, and American Robin of the park’s upland forest.
Located along the byway, the Two Rivers National Wildlife Refuge serves as a temporary home to thousands of wintering eagles and migrating birds. Witness the winter home of the thousands of eagles in the refuge. Experience the sights and sounds of various shades of ducks, geese, and myriad of geotropical migrants and shorebirds as they funnel through this important river corridor during their spring and fall migration.
The Meeting of the Great Rivers Scenic Route offers many fun and educational experiences, but make sure to leave time to visit Pere Marquette State Park, and enjoy the wide array of North American birds.
