From still lakes and meandering streams to the crashing waves of the mighty oceans, America's Byways® provide plenty of opportunities for the big catch.
A Chance at the Big One

Toothaker Island and Mooselookmeguntic Lake (ME) [1]
Find hundreds of fishing hotspots on Old Canada Road Scenic Byway and Rangeley Lakes Scenic Byway in Maine. A trip to these Byways may be your chance to bring out a real whopper. Catching 10-12 pounders in the miles and miles of interconnected waters of these Byways is not uncommon. The catch of the day may include small mouth bass, salmon, brook trout, fallfish, and brown trout. If you are an avid angler who won't let a frozen lake slow you down, go ice fishing for landlocked salmon, brook trout, rainbow trout, and smelt.
A Trip for Trout
While the Payette River is most known for its white water rapids, its best-held secret is its world-class trout fishing areas. A trip along the Payette River Scenic Byway in Idaho will also take you to many other prime fishing spots such as Brundage Mountain, Twin Lakes, and Tamarack Falls. Tamarack features a handicapped-accessible fishing bridge, which is a great place for children to cast a line.
A Catch on the Coast
For surf fishing, crabbing, and shrimping, the Louisiana coastline can be a lot of fun. Fishing from the shore on the Creole Nature Trail you may catch flounder, redfish, drum, shark and speckled trout. Further offshore you're likely to find red snapper, mackerel, tuna and amberjack. Large-mouth bass, crappie and catfish are abundant in the freshwater areas along the Byway. If you'd like to try your hand at catching crab or shrimp, bring along a net, a bucket, and some chicken or turkey necks for bait. Watch out for alligators, they like raw meat too, and the Creole Nature Trail is known for its abundance of alligator nesting areas.
Fishing the Deep Sea
Do you dream of deep-sea fishing in the great glacier waters of Alaska? A trip along any of Alaska's three nationally designated Byways could make your dream come true. So charter a boat and embark on a deep-sea fishing adventure on Alaska's Marine Highway, Glenn Highway, or The Seward Highway. You will also find rivers and lakes on each of Alaska's byways that are rich in red salmon, halibut and trout.
Whatever angling adventure you may be searching for, many of America's Byways are sure to provide unforgettable fishing trips in some of the most beautiful places in the country.
