The Rangeley Lakes Scenic Byway in Maine's Western Mountains region invites outdoor enthusiasts throughout the year, but in wintertime the towns of Rangeley and Oquossoc become a snowmobiler's paradise. With the byway's warm and inviting village atmosphere, one of Maine's largest snowmobile clubs, and over 150 miles of groomed trails, you'll find plenty of reasons to plan your next snowmobile trip here.
The byway's snowmobile system serves as a hub for the state's trail complex. Many of the region's forest and lake trails connect directly to restaurants, gas stations, and lodging, allowing riders to pull up to their favorite eatery or hotel without riding on local roads and narrow streets. Upon arriving in downtown Rangeley and Oquossoc, riders access the Interconnected Trail System (ITS) and rocket across perfectly groomed trails in virtually every direction. The ITS links the towns to the rest of the state's trails as well as a 260-mile international circuit into Canada.
Once the season is in swing, the Rangeley Lakes Snowmobile Club grooms the trails daily and provides up-to-date information about the best rides in the area. More experienced riders take off from the trail in the wooded mountains outside of town or dash across the frozen lakes and ponds.
To ensure a safe trip and future sledding in the region, the byway encourages all riders to ride at safe speeds and respect landowner rights by observing posted property restrictions.
The towns of Oquossoc and Rangeley provide a variety of amenities to entice winter enthusiasts.
