The rivers found around this byway boast the two deepest gorges on the continent as well as a variety of rapids for all skill levels. Take the Clearwater River, for example. Navigate through deep canyons, moderate rapids, and stunning scenery in the North Fork for a relaxing trip. Irish Railroad, on the other hand, pits you against a Class IV-V drop through massive boulders. The Lochsa River is named after the Native American word for rough water and with good reason; the river boasts 40 rapids that rate at Class IV or above. The Salmon River is known as the River of No Return, and is legendary for its variety of difficult terrain, as well as relaxing camping trips on sandy beaches. The Snake River's most difficult terrain is mostly found at the beginning and ranges between Class III and IV before settling into a more laid-back run.
The area's surrounding rivers contain a variety of freshwater fish, including cutthroat and rainbow trout. Sockeye salmon, Chinook salmon, and steelhead travel from the ocean for spawning in the fall. Steelhead is the Clearwater River's specialty, and catch and release fishing for smaller specimens usually begins in September. By late fall, the water churns with the fittest of the species.
