America's Byways® Press Room
October 10, 2003 - FHWA National Scenic Byways Program Web Site Captures Uniqueness of America
The Federal Highways Administration today announced a redesigned America’s Byways™ Web site (www.byways.org). In addition to providing a glimpse of unique Americana, travelers can use the site to help plan travel, store itineraries, post pictures of their trips, and even share experiences with other travel enthusiasts.
America’s Byways™ are a collection of 96 roads that enable travelers to enjoy their journey as much as their destination. All were designated by the US Secretary of Transportation.
Visitors in Metropolis, IL, for example, can find Superman, or at least a seven-foot-tall fiberglass statue of the superhero, in what is the self-proclaimed home of the “Man of Steel,” a stop along the Ohio River Scenic Byway. History buffs will want to visit George Washington’s bathtub along West Virginia’s Washington Heritage Trail - the only “monument” to presidential bathing.
The world’s largest mosquito, which is over four feet tall with an enormous wingspan, hovers near the Edge of the Wilderness Scenic Byway in Minnesota. But there is no need for a super bug repellent because the mosquito is actually a sculpture seated next to the byway information kiosk in the community of Effie. Travelers in Colorado won’t want to miss the Top of the Rockies Byway. Besides its breathtaking scenery, this byway is home to the city of Leadville, the highest incorporated community in the US at 10,200 feet above sea level.
Additional information about must-see destinations on America’s Byways™ is on the redesigned web site. The site’s new design allows travelers to quickly and easily find great trip ideas, print out fun-filled itineraries, and sign-up for “Byways Bound,” the new America’s Byways™ e-mail newsletter. “Byways Bound” will keep travelers informed about exciting travel adventures and activities available along the byways.
The FHWA National Scenic Byways Program includes 75 National Scenic Byways and 21 All-American Roads in 39 states, including nine with portions in more than one state. These roads were selected because they possess some or all of the following intrinsic qualities: scenic, historic, natural, recreational, cultural and archaeological.
